an yung ha sa yo...
Hello in Korean. Gam sa, ha me da; thank-you

Working as an ESL instructor just sort of happened by accident. I had left my last employer-based job to pursue my career as a writer, during which time my friend from Korea metioned she had a few students who desperately needed a tutor. Being a writer, it felt natural to accept this opportunity to make some friends from a foreign land and to earn a few extra bucks along the way.

What started out as a two-hour class helping my new students with their homework assignments, turned into me writing a 197-page text book titled: English: The Written Word, for beginners, intermediate and advanced students. The text book walked students through parts of the sentence, spelling, reading, essay writing and recognition assignments. The material I wrote and published was very popular and before I knew it, I was recruiting ESL students from Robson Street and popular ESL hang-out spots to come attend my five-week course.

Small groups started to form and I became a private teacher of the written language and conversation tutor in Vancouver - a place with already 170 ESL institutions downtown, but still a need for more. Our foreign visitors are smart and they get bored easily too, so my being Caucasian and born and raised in Canada really helped as did my creative, unique teaching methods.

*Wrote, edited and published ESL Textbook - English: The Written Word - ©2010/2001.

*Established an ESL course curriculum, marketing strategies for course participation. Taught private course to small groups over five week training periods.

*Hired, train and delegated work to private tutors in Vancouver.

After time I realized working with students in Vancouver was not fun enough. I decide ESL should be fun, so I developed the ESL is Fun® training program concept combining ESL language lessons with tourism and travel excursions through British Columbia and Vancouver Island.

I would take my students on tours of the Vancouver and Lower Mainland hot spots including beaches, festivals, Canadian cultural events, hiking trails, tourism spots, good restaurants, camping, fireworks, sight-seeing, etc. During these excursions we held down the ENGLISH ONLY rule and our conversations forced each student to really work hard on pronunciation, listening and hearing skills.

During our lunch break, we would tackle a solid hour of course lesson material. We had a blast and everybody was exhausted at the end of each six-eight hour day.

The next and obvious step of evolution for my ESL business venture was to introduce an accommodation acquisition assistance program to the list of choices for my prospective students. Without giving away all the fine-print on how this worked, I will simply say:

*Established a small scale International ESL Student accommodation acquisition pilot project - 2002. It worked well and with a financial investment of $50,000, this project could easily yield $500,000 per year for the right business manager.

I still take on occasional students for conversation tutoring. My rates are reasonable and discounts are available for group sessions. I currently am considering recruiting a small group class to talk about film production and the life as a Hollywood producer. Sound like fun?
